Duty to Accomodate Review

As previously mentioned, the Employer has changed its approach to accommodations. Currently we have entered into the ‘first phase’ and their focus is on the condition of arming for all FB members.

In summary, if an accommodation—whether due to injury or any reason for not being armed—is deemed permanent, or temporary but lasting beyond 24 months, members are now facing options that preclude them from staying in their current position. From all indications, this so-called “reasonable offer” process will be punitive and heavy-handed.

We understand that colleagues currently in this process have already received letters outlining the changes and the limited options they face. This sudden shift in policy is shocking and stressful. For those directly affected, it is overwhelming. These are not minor adjustments—they carry real consequences for people’s lives, families, and futures. As your union, our responsibility is both to challenge the Employer’s approach and to ensure no member goes through this alone.

We ask everyone to be mindful and supportive of colleagues impacted by this change. A kind word, a listening ear, and solidarity from peers can make a real difference. The truth is any one of us could find ourselves in a similar position—whether from an injury in the line of duty, a workplace accident, or health issues over time. That is why standing together now matters.

This is not just about individual cases. It’s about all of us, and the kind of workplace we want to protect. Please continue to support one another, stay connected with your union representatives, and know that we are committed to challenging this process every step of the way.
