If you have an issue in the workplace where you feel you are not being treated fairly you should try to address the situation with your supervisor, and/or contact a union steward for advice. A steward will meet with you and discuss the details. If you need to meet with a supervisor a steward can act as a witness and offer support during the meeting. If it is necessary the steward can further help you file a grievance regarding your situation.
“The grievance is a means for the union to protect members’ rights under the collective agreement. Filing a grievance is a legal right when there has been a violation of a right in the collective agreement and/or a member has been disciplined or terminated.”*
A grievance clearly exists if:
- Management violates the collective agreement
- The employer violates past practice.
- Management violates its own responsibilities
- Management breaks the law”*
You are your own best witness. You should keep detailed notes, emails and any other relevant documentation that will help you defend your position.
Any of the Executive or Stewards listed on the Stewards Page can help you file a grievance if you so choose
