I was recently congratulated on the anniversary of election day 2017. My how time flies. There is so much to learn that 3 years doesn’t seem like nearly enough time. Collective Agreements, Bargaining, Legislation, Grievance Handling, Branch Rules, Meetings, Meetings and more Meetings! I have developed a greater respect and appreciation towards all members who volunteered their time and energy towards progressing CIU Local 18 throughout the years.
Highlights of the past year include special appearances from guest speakers such as:
- JP Fortin, CIU National President,
- Morgan Gay, PSAC Lead Negotiator of our Contract,
- Lynn Meston, PSAC Regional Representative,
- Murray Star, CIU National Human Rights Rep, and soon
- Andrew Wiersema, National Rep for Young Workers.
Our “Prestrike Meeting” with the President of CIU National in attendance, the now infamous Rally on the coldest, snowiest day with over 100 people in attendance, walking the picket lines with Motor City Chrysler and the Windsor Casino. The Pride Parade and the Labour Day Parade. My favourite, the Summer Picnic at Mic Mac Park with all those games, cotton candy and face painting! Wow! It’s been exciting!
Every minute of serving this Membership has been an honour! My only wish is that I would have started this journey while I was much younger!
How you choose to support or participate in Union activities is up to you! I hope to see you all at the next Event!
